General Information
1. Biome – a major regional or global biotic community, such as a rainforest or desert, that is characterized by its dominant plant life forms and natural climate.
a. Tropical Rainforest – a biome that consists of dense forest made up of evergreen trees that grow in a region with heavy annual rainfall.
2. Locales where tropical rainforests exist:
a. Africa (largest one is in Zaire)
b. South America (largest one is in Brazil)
c. Asia (largest one is in Indonesia)
3. Pictures: see attachment
labeled “Pictures”
4. Natural renewable resources:
a. Biomass = the trees for example
b. Water = due to the heavy rainfall received in these biomes
c. Solar = the tropical rainforests are located on the Equator and the Equator receives a significant amount of sunlight
5. Nonrenewable resources:
a. None (I could not find any when I looked so I don’t think it has
any)
6. Tourism:
a. Ecotourism has brought on a positive effect for tropical rainforests by giving people a better appreciation for them as well as helping the locals earn more money.
Examples of the tourism include animal viewing, scenic jungle tours, and even
viewing cultural sights/native villages.
7. Fun Facts!
a. Tropical rainforests are home to over half the world’s
species, all squeezed into a narrow strip of equatorial land.
b. Tropical rainforests act as the world’s thermostat: they absorb the carbon
dioxide in the air, store the carbon, and then provide us with oxygen.
c. Over 25% of natural medicines have been discovered in tropical rainforests.
They’ve given us chemicals that can treat/cure diabetes, heart conditions, skin diseases, and malaria.
d. The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world.
e. Originally rainforests covered 14% of the Earth’s surface. But now, due to deforestation, they only cover around 6%.
