Conseration
1. Examples of restoration ecology/reconciliation ecology:
a. Having protected areas within tropical rainforests
b. Promote awareness of the danger the tropical rainforests are in by
encouraging ecotourism
c. Protecting the endangered species living in the tropical rainforest, thus
preventing that part of the rainforest from being torn down
d. Consistently replanting trees as they are being cut up
2. List of protected areas within tropical rainforests (plus 2 distinctive
features):
a. Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary = provides botanical tours and education
programs located in Hawaii
b. Tropical Australian Rainforest Sanctuary = home to over 200 species of
rainforest flora it harvests, stores, and recycles the rainfall received in their tropical rainforests
c. Tirimbina Rainforest National Wildlife Refuge = the refuge is operated as
an education, research, and ecotourism center by a private foundation in Milwaukee, which consists of lowland tropical rainforests
d. Rio Silanche Bird Sanctuary = one of the only possible places to see:
purple-chested hummingbird, double-banded graytail, black-tipped cotinga, and
blue-whiskered tanager and undergoing reforestation through a project called
CarbonNeg
e. Kulamba Wildlife Reserve = important sanctuary for species characteristic
of flat, swampy coastal lowlands and significant for the conservation of 8 different primate species, particularly the orangutan
f. Port Douglas Wildlife Park = works alongside Tropical Australian Rainforest Sanctuary and commits its conservation through the Wildlife Rescue Program
g. Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra = made up of 3 different parks:
Gunung Leuser National Park, KerinciSeblat National Park, and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. Home to approximately 10,000 plant species, more than 200 mammal species, and some 580 bird species (17 of the plant species are endangered as well as 21 of the bird species)
3. Organizations aiding the conservation of tropical rainforests:
a. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) – UNESCO aids tropical rainforests by claiming certain areas as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This makes it so where that area or landmark cannot be touched and must be preserved, for the benefit of humanity. Doing this for tropical rainforests helps them from being completely destroyed.
b. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – The organization promotes and funds the
awareness of preserving nature. This favors for tropical rainforests because the organization wants to protect the tropical rainforests as well as the animals that live in them.
c. Rainforest Alliance – Rainforest Alliance’s mission is to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainability of the human race without depleting our rainforests. As an organization solely based on conserving our tropical rainforests, it helps businesses and companies utilize tropical rainforests in a conservative manner that benefits them economically and the environment ecologically.
d. National Wildlife Federation (NWF) – This organization is an American
organization that promotes its people to preserve wildlife and nature for the next generation to come. It funds and supports other smaller organizations that have the same mission, to include some of the projects being initiated for conserving the tropical rainforests.
